Al passed away on July 20, 2021 at the age of 68, in his home in Grand Rapids, Ohio. His valiant and brave battle with serious medical issues, in recent years, showed his courage in facing life challenges with a smile. Despite the pain, Al came out as a hero and stayed strong until the end.
Al was born June 29, 1953, to parents Bill and Ann Liggett, who preceded him in death. As first born, Al was named after both grandfathers.
As a boy, he was always outdoors, playing baseball. This passion for baseball and softball continued into adulthood. He played for USAF teams and city and church leagues, in the Toledo area.
After graduating from Sylvania High School, he enlisted in the USAF in 1973. He served as a Sergeant Security Specialist, in Thailand, Vietnam, England, and the USA. Before he was discharged in 1977, he met and married the love of his life, Barbara Shipman Martin, in Altus, Oklahoma. He was happy to become a father to Barbara’s son, Joel Martin. Al and Barbara welcomed their daughter, Allison, in 1983. Al and Barb have been married 43 years.
Al had a strong work ethic and was an excellent provider for his family. Owner of Liggett and Associates painting for 20 years, and building superintendent for various construction companies. He never retired and worked almost to the end for Pepper Construction, which he considered the best employer of his career.
Al enjoyed leisure time of fishing, boating, hunting, refinishing furniture, music (especially Bohemian Rhapsody), and antiquing and auctions with his wife.
Al is survived by his wife, Barbara, children Joel (Sarah) Martin and Allison (Adam) Roller, beloved grandchildren Addison and Andrew Roller, Reece, Elle, and Carys Martin. Survived by siblings Sandy (Chris) Westfall, Barbara (Pedro) Farias, Jeri (John) Colvin, Nick (Anita) and Randy (Cindy) Liggett, in-laws, Georgia Yawn, Linda and Bryon Miller, Nita and Isadore Brosett. Mike, Charles and Harold Yarnell, many foster brothers and sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.
