Alice Kathryn McCoy Livingston
June 21, 1929 – May 5, 2022
With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to Alice Livingston, who died peacefully following a brief illness and hospitalization. Wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, she will be mourned by many. She was born in Columbus, Ohio, to Neal and Jessie (Williamson) McCoy, and lived in several Ohio communities throughout her childhood, most notably Summit Station, Pomeroy, Bellefontaine, and Sterling, and was a 1947 graduate of Sterling High School.
She married Paul Livingston at the Reformed Church in Wooster, Ohio, on May 28, 1949, and moved to Fremont in 1952. Together they raised six children: Keith (Mary Jane) in Sanford, North Carolina; Scott (Laura) in Columbus, Ohio; Gayle (Dan) Troy in Dunbarton, New Hampshire; David (Jessica) in Las Vegas, Nevada; Wayne (Michael Blake) in Perrysburg, Ohio; and Timothy (Joanne) in Las Vegas, Nevada.
She was predeceased in death by her parents, her brother Roger (Carol), and by her son, Wayne; and leaves behind her loving husband, the rest of her children and their spouses, her two grandsons (Tyler and Benjamin), her brother David, and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and other family members along with friends both near and far.
Alice was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Fremont, where she sang in the choir for more than 67 years, served as a deacon, and worked on various committees and programs for many years. She also sang with the Terra Community College Choir from its inception until its interruption by Covid. She loved being part of the Croquet Club at the Hayes Home, and was a person who tried many activities throughout her life, from crocheting to harmonica lessons.
An accomplished seamstress, Alice worked for several Fremont institutions over the years, including Joseph’s Department Store, Lytle’s, and Quality Cleaners. She also worked at the hospital as an Aide.
She continuously surprised and delighted her family and friends by her creative and quirky ideas. One memorable Christmas, she bought kazoos for the entire family and then led a long session of “making music by kazoo.” Another time she volunteered to make sugar cookies (her specialty) in the shape of dog bones for the Fremont Community Theater production of “Snoopy” (in which son, Wayne, was playing Snoopy). It was originally scheduled to be a one-night presentation, but gradually became a longer run, so she ended up making more than 1200 sugar cookies, with the rationale that she couldn’t allow a child to get a special cookie one night and another child not to get a cookie the next day.
She loved to travel, especially with other members of the family, and enjoyed visiting places throughout most of the US, all over England, Scotland, and Wales, in Paris, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and in the eastern Canadian provinces. She was particularly fond of taking meandering driving trips throughout Ohio, visiting family homes, cemeteries, and favorite spots, but also seeing the amazing things throughout Ohio itself.
She found joy in the little things of life – she loved the fractal geometry of trees, and the daffodils in her yard this spring; she participated joyfully in several choirs; she loved designing quilts and once made a life-size “Grandma” doll for her daughter; she enjoyed riding around to look at wildflowers and gardens; and nothing pleased her more than a good card game with her husband and other family members.
Calling Hours will be held on Wednesday, May 11th, from 5:00 to 6:30 PM at Hanneman Keller Funeral Home, 416 S. Arch Street, Fremont, Ohio, and from 10:30 until the time of her funeral service at 11:30 AM on Thursday, May 12th, in the First Presbyterian Church, 120 S. Park Avenue, Fremont, Ohio. The church will provide a luncheon immediately following the funeral.
