Betty McBride Obituary

Betty McBride

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1924,  Elizabeth McBride was best known for her kindness, compassion, and her love for crossword puzzles and reading mysteries.  Her affinity for sudokus and her immense collection of Liberty Puzzles was well known. You could always find the puzzle of the moment spread out on the dining room table.

In 1946 Betty graduated from the Pennsylvania College for Women where she studied nursing and became an RN at Allegheny General Hospital. Married to Jack McBride, she had six children Susan, Judy, Linda, Jim, Patti, and David, and the family settled in Findlay, Ohio.  She balanced raising, providing, and supporting her children with working overnight shifts. Throughout the house you could always find half full cups of coffee because no matter what, Betty had her hands occupied and her heart full.

Betty never shied away from good, hard work. She worked in several departments at Blanchard Valley Hospital, then worked as Director of Nursing for Winebrenner Village Nursing Home.  After several years as Director of family planning with the Community Action Commission, she helped establish the family planning clinic near Findlay College.  She dedicated herself to making a positive impact and influenced the lives of countless young women.

Beyond her years of service in medicine, she was a faithful member of Universalist Unitarian Church and had many talents such as knitting, playing bridge, Mah Jong, and winning card games. She had memberships in Town & Campus, P.E.O., Garden Clubs, Mazza Enthusiasts, and the League of Women Voters. In 1995, she and her husband were named Distinguished University of Findlay Associates.

Betty is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Per her request there will not be a service. Memorial donations may be made to Mazza Museum or The Center for Safe and Healthy Children which were both essential institutions to Betty. Her family would like to thank every person who wrote, made time to see, and kept Betty laughing in her last chapter of life. Thank you.
