Cecil Gene Long, 93, of Burgoon passed away Monday, January 17, 2022 at the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky.
Gene was born on March 20, 1928 in Burgoon, Ohio to the late Cecil and Geneva (Branyen) Long. He married Mary Querin on September 18, 1954 in Angola, Indiana and she preceded him in death on April 3, 2005. Gene is survived by his sons: Mike (Marge) Long of Tiffin, Ohio, and Jerry (Renae) Long of Alpharetta, Georgia; a daughter, Kristie (Robert) Gangwer of Kansas, Ohio and grandchildren, Jessica Long, Jacob Long, Joshua Long, Jonathan Long, Nicholas Gangwer and Alex Gangwer. He was preceded in death by his son William “Bill” Long and siblings: Cecil Long Jr., Gerald Long, James Long, Dorothy Izzy and Iva Burkin.
Gene was a graduate of Jackson Burgoon High School and was a member of the Burgoon United Methodist Church. Gene served as the Jackson Township Clerk for many years. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War with the Fourth Infantry Division. Gene was also a member of the Bettsville American Legion, Fremont VFW, Sandusky County Historical Society and Kin Hunters. Gene was an avid Detroit Tigers fan who also enjoyed a good round of golf. Gene enjoyed studying history and his family genealogy. Gene also authored a book entitled “Conquering the Black Swamp”. Gene was a loving, caring and compassionate individual who would help any one in a time of need but most importantly was his family, whom he loved dearly.
Visitation for Gene will be on Friday, January 21, 2022 from 10 AM until the time of Gene’s Celebration of Life Service at 12:00 Noon in the Hanneman-Chudzinski-Keller Funeral Home, 416 S. Arch St., Fremont, Ohio 43420. Interment with Military honors will follow in the Smith Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Gene’s honor to the Burgoon United Methodist Church or to the Lakota Athletic Boosters.
