Dennis Smith Obituary

Dennis Jay Smith, 73, son of Robert C. and Mary M. Smith, and a lifelong Fremont resident. died Jan 5, 2022 at Bellevue Hospital following several weeks of declining health. He was a graduate of St. Ann’s Elementary, Ross High School, (class of 1967) and Terra Tech, completing his degree in computer graphics. Dennis was a proud Navy Veteran of 10 years, having served on the USS Ticonderoga and the USS Cambria. He was employed in various capacities at the Fremont News Messenger printing facility. Dennis was also a long-time volunteer at the Rutherford B Hayes Presidential Library, where he was recognized for having worked 6,641 hours, nearly breaking the record for accumulated volunteer service. Dennis was quiet and intellectually curious. He had great appreciation for the computer, allowing him to expand his world and interests. It especially delighted him to exchange daily quips and witty remarks with correspondents. Always a book in hand, he was a frequent visitor at Birchard Public Library. He was also an ardent fan of jazz music, having accumulated an impressive collection of CDs. Dennis is survived by his devoted friend, Carol Moore, and siblings Elaine Smith Garvin (Richard dec), Bloomfield Hills MI, Patrick R. Smith (Pamela dec), Limerick PA, Randall C. Smith (Frances) of Richmond VA, as well as nieces and nephews. Special appreciation is given for the support to Dennis by: Bill Bevens, TRIPS transportation, Meals on Wheels, Memorial Hospital and Fremont EMS. Memorial services will be held in the spring.
