Leo "Bub" Barlow Obituary

Leo “Bub” Dale Barlow, 90, of Liberty Center, Ohio passed away on September 14, 2020 in Waterville, Ohio.

Bub was born August 4, 1930 in rural Henry County (Ohio). Graduating from Liberty Center High School in 1948, he worked briefly as a carpenter’s apprentice before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1950. He served during the onset of the Korean War and engaged battle during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir campaign.

During the last year on active duty, Bub met and married his wife, Shirley Felter, while stationed in Washington, D.C. They wed in Forest Glen, Maryland on November 10, 1954. Bub was a rural mail carrier for 33 years with the Liberty Center Post Office retiring in 1990. He also served on the Liberty Center School Board and also served 20 years as a Washington Township Trustee.

Bub was known for his affiliation with various military organizations that included his lifetime membership with the Chosin Few Association, the Marine Corps League of Defiance. He served 4 years as Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post 6596, the American Legion, American Veterans (AMVETS) and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), all in Henry County. Known for his community service, Bub also belonged to a number of civilian organizations such as the Free & Accepted Masons (F&AM) of Liberty Center, the Ohio Township Association, the Henry County Sportsman Club, Henry County Farm Bureau, National Rifle Association (NRA), Northwest Turkey Federation (NWTF), as well as the National Rural Letter Carriers Association.

With the exception of his years away from home due to his military commitment, Bub spent his entire life in the Liberty Center area. He became skilled in hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening, and raising livestock. Due to his years as a rural mail carrier, he had the ability to look at a residence and state WHO used to live there, how he knew them, and what hobbies they shared if any. His outgoing personality gave him the ability to make many friends who will sorely miss him.

Bub is survived by his wife of 66 years, Shirley; sons Roger of Amherst, Ohio, James and John, both of Liberty Center; daughters Karen Trumbull of Martinsburg, West Virginia, and Kathy (Anthony) Muniz of Bowling Green, Ohio as well as five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews that he had grown close to throughout the years.

Bub is preceded in death by his parents Alonzo “John” and Ruth (Jeffers) Barlow. All of his siblings; brothers Guy Barlow and William Barlow, sisters Mary Kessler, Helen Donnelly, Betty Heidtman, and Peggy Lambert. Regrettably, Bub’s five-year-old son Ronald also preceded him in 1963 after a brief and unexpected illness.
