Manuel "Manny" Cabrera Suarez, 71, of Lima, Ohio passed away on May 24, 2021, after a courageous battle with COVID-19. He was born on December 22, 1949 in Cayey, Puerto Rico to the late Pablo Cabrera and Florentina Suarez. He married Jo "Joi" Evelyn Campbell on May 9, 1975 and she survives him.
Manny is also survived by his two sons: Armando and Jonah Cabrera; sisters: Maria T. Cabrera and Maria V. Zayas; sister-in-laws Taffy (Tom Makley) Campbell, Cathy (Brad) Stuber, Lucy (Terry) Sullivan, and Geri Mangas; brother-in-law Kevin (Nancy Wagner) Mangas; god-daughter Koraima Hernandez; a host of nieces and nephews; and his four-legged best friend, Millie. He is preceded in death by his parents; in-laws: Mam and Pop Campbell; brothers: Pablo and Luis Cabrera; sister Maria L. Morales; and brother-in-law Miguel "Tito" Zayas.
After moving to Long Island, New York as a young man, Manny joined the Job Corp then later enlisted and served in the United States Air Force for several years. It was in Minot, North Dakota where he met and married Joi, a fellow service woman in the USAF. After Honorable Discharge, he and Joi moved to Lima, Ohio where he continued to serve in the Ohio National Guard. Manny was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
Manny's greatest passion was his music. While serving in Minot, he DJ'd under the name Mannix. His first music company in Lima was State Side Sound then later, Piano Melodies. As a musician, Manny played in several bands including FUSE, Decades, Split Decision and Stallions...but none were more lively than his own garage bands. Bill Seech, a long time bandmate that passed in 2014, now has his buddy to rock with in Heaven. Manny's piano talent brought joy to the staff and seniors of many local nursing homes as well as the parishioners at St. Gerard's Catholic Church during Spanish Mass.
