Mary Benner Obituary

Mary Benner passed away March 15, 2024, peacefully in her home.

Mary was born on February 2, 1935, to Salvatore (Sam) Ruggiero and Maria (Reino) Ruggiero. She graduated from Gibsonburg High School in 1953. Mary married Alfred Hoffmann on August 18, 1956, and they were married for 23 wonderful years before he passed away. She married John Benner on November 23, 1988, and has spent the last 35 years married to her best friend. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend; all who will remember her contagious smile, ability to always see the positive pure joy in everything, and her arms open with rocking hugs. Mary was an avid sports fan, especially the Fighting Irish and the Buckeyes. She enjoyed spending time with her family and was especially proud of her Italian heritage.

She is survived by her children: Laura (Gene) Baker, Dan Hoffmann, and Joe Hoffmann; sister: Susie Rusher; brother: Anthony (Ruthann) Ruggiero; grandchildren: Nick (Lindsay) Baker, Amanda (Johny) Ibanez, Hannah Hoffmann and Chris Hergesheimer, Andrew Hoffmann, Christian Hoffmann; Step-children: Mark (Jean) Benner, Chuck (Jodi) Benner, Pete (Jolynn) Benner, Mike (Carol) Benner, Matt (Lisa) Benner, Teresa Gordon, John Benner; Step grandchildren: Philip (Madeline) Benner, Stephanie (Gavin) Beard, Erica (Jim) Baumer, Jessica (Brian) Skinner, Courtney (Josh) Terry, Chad (Leah) Benner, Curt (Jill) Benner, Mitch (Amanda) Benner, Lauren (Thomas) Wilson, Angela (Jeff) Finn, Ashley Benner, Alison Benner, Adam Benner, Andrew (Katie) Benner, Megan (Evan) Gordon, Becca Gordon, Derek (Kady) Benner, Shannon Benner; may great grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Alfred Hoffmann; brothers: Nick, Patsey, Carmine Ruggiero; sisters: Maria Ruggiero, Concetta Hoffman; daughter in law: Stacy Benner; son-in law: Jerry Gordon.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Mary's name to Bishop Hoffman Catholic School or Heartland Hospice. Visitation will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Thursday March 21, 2024, at 9:00 AM. Funeral Mass will follow visitation at 10:00 AM. Burial will take place after Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
