Merlin "Mike" Mygrant Obituary

Merlin W. “Mike” Mygrant, 94, of McComb, passed away Thursday, April 15, 2021 at the Birchaven Village.

Mike was born on October 26, 1926 in Findlay, Ohio to the late Warden Waldo and Helen Elizabeth (DeLong) Mygrant. He married Frances Cramer on May 23, 1948 and she preceded him in death on June 11, 2000. He then married Donnalou Grube on August 9, 2003 and she preceded him in death on January 18, 2015. Mike is survived by his son John Mygrant of Akron and his daughter Brenda Mygrant of McComb; sister Ruth (Ned) Ammons of Genoa; step-children: Dan Grube of Hamilton and Laurie (Larry) Keller of Waycross, Georgia. He was also preceded in death by his brother Keith Mygrant.

Mike was a 1943 graduate of Van Buren High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II. Upon being honorably discharge from the United States Air Corp, Mike entered the private business world managing the Hoytville Lumber yard, Pendleton/ McComb Lumber yard and the Leipsic Lumber yard. He retired from Manley out of Findlay in 1981. Mike also served on the Board of Directors for Peoples Bank and later Rurban Financial Corp. He was a life member of the American Legion Mulford-Butler Post 511 of McComb for 74 years, as well as the McComb United Methodist Church and later the McComb Church of Christ. Mike was also very active in the McComb Scouting program for many years and was frequent “Polar Bear” attendant as scouts progressed thru their programs. Mike along with Bob Wilson helped spearhead the McComb Veterans Memorial in honoring all who served.  ​Mike also was in charge of decorating veteran graves for Memorial Day services for more than 60 years with his family until taken over jointly by members of the Legion and VFW Posts.  Committed to community service and support, Mike provided funding to the Village of McComb  to establish the Village of McComb K9 unit allowing for the purchase of a dog, provide the necessary dog and handler training, and the equipping for safety of dog and handler in an already owned village vehicle.  He additionally planned support for emergency veterinary care should the K9 become injured in performance of his duties.

A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at 1:00 PM in the McComb Union Cemetery, where the Hancock County Memorial Squad will conduct Military Honors.

Memorial contributions may be gifted in Mike’s honor to charity of the donors’ choice.
