Miriam Grace Heistand, 92, of Findlay passed away on Thursday, September 9, 2021.
Miriam was born July 26, 1929 in rural Findlay to Dorothy and Lester Vogelsong. She was tiny but plenty feisty. She was met by siblings Margorie (Brown) and Kenneth Vogelsong. She was one of the last students to attend the “Little Red School House.”
Miriam attended Findlay High School. On June 16, 1945 she married William C. Heistand and they were married for 51 years until Bill passed away in 1997. They had four children, Jeri (Robert) Cramer, Ralph (Sally) Heistand, Vicie (Edmund) Wilson, and David (Mary) Heistand. She is also survived by the following grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Jill Kelly, Dan Cramer, Jodi Kline, Kim Snyder, Bill Heistand, Jim Susko, John Heistand, Jennifer Dutrow, Heather Miskoe and 24 great-grandchildren.
Miriam graduated from Findlay College in 1961 and first taught at Hopewell-Louden then transferred to Cory-Rawson Elementary School where she taught 3rd grade for 26 years. After retiring from teaching, she worked at Wal-mart for several more years.
Bill and Miriam were members of several churches. Miriam was a current member of the College First Church of God. Several years ago, she taught Sunday school to pre-schoolers there with her daughter Vicie.
Miriam was also involved with Hancock County Retired Teachers Bible Study, and loved to talk to anyone who would lend an ear. She loved to meet people and go places (but she probably would be a little late). You had to be sure to hide your candy dish because she would be likely to sneak three or four pieces.
Sadly, most of her friends have passed away and other than children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews, surviving are two sisters-in-law Marjie (Stan) Wilkins and Reva Vogelsong.
Visitation for Miriam will be held on Monday, September 13, 2021 from 1:00 PM until the time of her Celebration of Life Service at 2:00 PM in the Hanneman Funeral Home, 201 Osborn Avenue, Findlay, Ohio 45840. Interment will follow in the Maple Grove Cemetery. Miriam’s services will be livestreamed on the Hanneman Funeral Home Findlay & McComb Facebook page.
Memorial contributions may be made in Miriam’s honor to the charity of the donor’s choice.
