Paul Courtney, 96, of Fremont Ohio passed away on April 28, 2026.
He was born in Fremont to Orley and Margaret (LeJeune) Courtney. He graduated from St. Joseph high school in 1947.
He served in the U.S. Navy and attended Chicago Technical College. In 1952, he married Barbara Jean Hesselbart at Holy Angels Church in Sandusky Ohio who passed away in 1992 after 40 years of marriage. They raised a family of 3 daughters and 4 sons.
Paul was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Parish in Fremont. He formally served on the Parish Council, Pastoral Council, Ushered, was a communion distributor, was a member of the School Board and completed the Diocesan Lay Ministry program. He was active in the Adult Religious Education program and was also a Memorial Hospital volunteer.
Paul was employed at Whirlpool Corporation for 43 years, he retired as Manager of Maintenance and Plant Engineering in 1994.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Moose Lodge 1286.He held office in both the Moose Legion and the Moose Lodge.
In 1999 he married Carol A. Miller. She is the mother of 7 daughters and numerous grandchildren and great grand children, who all still survive.
Surviving are Paul’s children Diane (Tom) Mosser, David (Brenda) Courtney, Donna (Craig) Miller, Dale Courtney, Douglas (Marybeth) Courtney, Dennis (Beth) Courtney and Dawn Courtney. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by father Orley Courtney, mother Margaret LeJeune Courtney, and wife Barbara Hesselbart Courtney. He was also preceded in death by sisters Mary Jane Buehler and Evelyn Wolf, and brothers James Courtney, Eugene Courtney, Robert Courtney, and daughter in law Jenni Courtney.
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 4, 2026 from 4pm to 6pm at Hanneman-Keller Funeral Home, Fremont, Ohio. A Funeral Mass will be held on May 5 at 10:00am at Fremont St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will immediately follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial Contributions can be made out to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
