Ray Edward Crisp Jr., age 69, passed away on March 15, 2026, at Lost Creek Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Lima, Ohio.
Ray was born on February 21, 1957, in Lima, Ohio, to Ray Crisp Sr. and Grace Crisp, both of whom preceded him in death. He graduated from Lima Senior High School in 1975.
Ray was an exceptional athlete and standout football player. His extraordinary athletic ability earned him a full football scholarship to Marshall University. During his high school and collegiate career, he set records for kick returns and achieved what was then the longest kickoff return in the nation.
Ray had a deep love for traveling and good food. For many years, he traveled to various cities with his close friend, "Smoking Joe," preparing and serving barbecue. He continued this work until a serious health scare made it impossible for him to continue.
Later, Ray relocated to Indianapolis, where he began working at the Convention Center as a sous chef and server. He took great pride in his work and truly enjoyed serving others through his culinary talents.
Ray was also a devoted and loving brother. When his sister Sandra suffered a debilitating brain injury, Ray stepped into his role as big brother in an even deeper way, offering care, strength, and unwavering support during her time of need.
Eventually, Ray moved back to Lima, where his mental health began to decline, and he required specialized care. He became a resident of Lost Creek , where he remained until his passing. During this time, he often enjoyed overnight visits with his cousin LaRue Ward, savoring the meals she lovingly prepared and staying up late watching Martin, laughing throughout the night. Ray"s attitude and demeanor remained positive and loving.
He is survived by his son, Tyrone Russell; his daughter, Rayette Mayes; his sisters, Vivian (Dana) Brooks and Ashli Crisp; his brother, George (Stacy) Crisp; his stepmother, Barbara Crisp; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his brother, David Crisp, and his sister, Sandra Sample.
Ray will be remembered for his athletic excellence, his passion for cooking, his love of travel, and the strength he showed to those he loved.
