William Burton Hammett
Bill was born to Bertha and Cornell Hammett in Olmstead, Illinois on July 8, 1937.
Bill had two siblings Larry and his beloved Dixie "Bootsie." He also treasured the love and relationships of many cousins.
Bill was a champion for and loved his sister Bootsie with all that he had. Because of her, he was an amazing champion of the disabled. Especially the developmentally disabled community in Hampton and Newport News, Virginia.
Bill was blessed to have and bonus sister who he held dear in Maxine.
Bill served in the US Air Force and overflowed with love of our great country and all that served.
Bill spent most of his life in Newport News, Virginia and proudly served on Police and Fire departments there.
As a lottery winner, in 2017, Bill was able to begin an amazing new life in Ohio beside Lake Erie. With his two daughters, Lennie and Lisa and their sassy spouses Doug and Steve. He also was awarded two bonus daughters in Kim and Donna. He has spent many hours pestering and loving on his precious feline son Willis.
Bill lived out his dreams surrounded by the love of grandchildren, Christopher, Travis, Jacob, Elaine, Rachel, Wes, Randy, Kristina, Amanda, Jessica, Matt, Eric and Beth, along with twelve incredible great grandchildren.
Bill's favorite things were women, watermelon, beer, ice cream, Nascar races, shop projects and studying American military history.
Bill was blessed with dedicated friends John, Peg, Dale and Brenda.
Bill went to be with our Heavenly Father on August 27, 2024 surrounded by loved ones. We know that he ran into the waiting arms of Bootsie who he most loved and his dearest canine companion Eastwood in addition to so many others who loved and waited for their reunion.
Bill didn't want any services so we ask that friends and family wanting to celebrate him do so by remembering him with a toast, an ice cream cone, helping a stranger or animal in need. Do something with or for someone else to remember times that you shared together.
For those wishing to celebrate Bill's life with a memorial gift we ask that you consider a memorial donation to Sleep In Heavenly Peace. Their mission statement is "No kid sleeps on the floor in our town!" This non-profit builds beds for local children and delivers them to their homes with new bedding and ready for sweet dreams. Make your check to SHP and mail that gift to 450 Rocky-Ridge Rd, Oak Harbor, OH 43449.
